Executives at WE-SPARK Health Institute met with some healthcare partners and discussed how best to direct people to reliable information. Some wanted mental health links for their families, or local numbers or even information on moving a research idea forward. WE-SPARK launched its resource hub Monday offering statistics, research opportunities, information and resources for healthcare professionals, mental health supports, local updates and supports for children and teens. “We created this one-stop-shop resource — for researchers, healthcare providers and our community — there’s something there for everyone” stated Dr. Lisa Porter, Executive Director WE-SPARK Health Institute. University donates needed supplies to the hospital The University of Windsor is donating supplies and equipment to Windsor Regional Hospital for its response to the COVID-19 virus. The items were collected from labs from the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Human Kinetics, and the university’s chemical control centre, as well as the Faculty of Nursing. “The response from faculty and staff across campus has been amazing,” said Chris Houser, dean of the Faculty of Science. “They want to help in any way they can because they see the University as an important community partner.” Items that have been donated include boxes of gloves, masks, disposable gowns, hand sanitizer, and two ventilators. “The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an international shortage of critical personal protective equipment,” said Gisele Seguin, executive director of the Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation. “The University of Windsor’s willingness to help will ensure our front-line staff are able to remain healthy and safe. UWindsor chemists lend expertise to produce locally-made hand sanitizer UWindsor chemistry professor John Trant is working with local industry to produce hand sanitizer.   University of Windsor chemists have teamed up with three local businesses to bring a made-in-Windsor-Essex hand sanitizer to market. UWindsor researcher John Trant is working with Wolfhead Distillery; InnerSeasonings International, maker of the TBQ line of sauces; and Peak Processing, a local maker of edible and topical cannabis products. Dr. Trant is securing the ingredients he needs to make the product in short supply globally because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Trant intends to use an ethanol-based by-product of the distilling process as the main ingredient in his formula. He’ll need additives to give the product a gel-like consistency and glycerine or propylene glycol to protect the skin from the harshness of the disinfectant. “We are going to customize the formula,” Trant said. As luck would have it, one of the post-doctoral fellows in his lab, Fred Shahbazi, is a cosmetics chemist.…
