OVERVIEW:
A popular analytical cell-biology technique making use of light to count and profile individual cells in a heterogeneous mixture. Cells are funnelled through a narrow channel and light illuminates the cells as they pass through one at a time. Sensors then detect the light that is reflected, diffracted, emitted and refracted from cells and computers analyze this data to make conclusions. Analysis of markers present allows for cell identification and sorting such as the presence of cancer cells in a tissue sample, amonst many other possibilities.
