The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has surged among Indigenous populations in Canada, with rates 17.2% higher than their non-Indigenous counterparts. Historical and socio-economic factors have significantly contributed to this disparity. While lifestyle optimization is crucial for diabetes management, indigenous older adults encounter unique barriers to effective nutrition counselling. To address these challenges, Erie Shores HealthCare (ESHC) will develop and implement a culturally safe nutrition counselling program tailored for older adults in Caldwell First Nation. This study will co-create the intervention with the target population, train peer counsellors using motivaitonal interviewing techniques, and evaluate changes in nutritional behaviour. This initiative seeks to enhance long-term diabetes management and provide evidence to inform resource allocaiton and policy decisions.

Implementing culturally safe nutrition counselling and peer training using motivational interviewing techniques, is expected to yield significant behavioural changes and improvements in long-term diabetes management. Emphasizing Indigenous control and culturally relevant practices will likely enhance the program's sustainability and effectiveness, providing valuable evidence to guide resourse allocation and future interventions for similar communities.
