Until a vaccine is developed, our ability to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in our community is directly dependent on our capacity to rapidly test people, diagnose the virus and place those infected in isolation. Currently, Windsor-Essex, and most communities in Canada, suffer from insufficient testing capabilities. To overcome the current challenges in the rapid diagnosis of COVID-19, our team will develop a highly-sensitive near-patient diagnostic device based on thin film transistors (TFTs). This device will detect COVID-19 in minimally-processed patient samples. Upon successful achievement of our research objectives, our team will have access to a sensitive medical device capable of reproducibly and rapidly detect low levels of COVID- 19; with such device in hands, our response to the crisis will be significantly improved, thus helping local healthcare providers to fight the virus and reduce its spread.
