The Canada Hood is a revolutionary non-invasive ventilation device that builds on long standing, proven effectiveness of helmet ventilation employed in Europe. Hood/helmet-based ventilation has been shown to be superior in ARDS and there is mounting strong anecdotal evidence of its efficacy and life-saving abilities during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Standard methods of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) generate aerosols thereby exposing patients and medical staff to infectious pathogens and effectively negating their use. Hood/helmet ventilation provides a controlled micro-environment that contains and filters any such spread and allows for the use of NIV. During Phase 1 of the COVID-19 pandemic, these types of hoods were not commercially available for use in Canada and much of North America. This was likely due to the huge supply-demand mismatch that occurred in a pandemic setting in Europe where they are manufactured. This situation will repeat itself in Phase 2 outbreaks or in a novel pandemic situation.
The goal is to demonstrate the efficacy of the Canada Hood design as a viable/optimal method for delivering controlled non-invasive ventilation in a micro-environment that eliminates exterior exposure of potential aerosol generation.
